How do I start a Magazine

Before you launch a magazine you need to put in some serious ground work before hand. Starting with a solid idea of what you magazine is about, who it is for and how often it will be published. Different type of publications are published at differing frequencies, this can range from weekly or monthly through to bi-monthly or quarterly. Some academic magazines are only published twice a year. The most common questions we are asked are:

How to establish who the competition is in the particular genre?
What software to purchase?
What are the pros and cons of using a publishing company?
What ongoing costs are there?
What advertisers should I be targeting?
Plus many more questions and issues
There are a number of problems you can run into when starting a magazine, and many of these have brought down many publications that really could have taken off. However most of these issues could have been avoided if proper planning had been undertaken from the beginning. If you are consider starting your own magazine then get the right advise from the outset. The more informed you are, the more likely you are to succeed.
