How to start a Magazine
There
are a number of steps that need to be taken before starting a magazine.
The first is, of course, an idea. Then you need to start considering,
the layout, what features you might have, are you going to use specialist
software, will you publish and distribute in-house or use a private firm.
You also need to consider where your funding/revenue will come from and
what staff you hire. There are many reasons people start their own magazines
including:
wanting to control the content
to present a topic that is not already covered
to convey a particular point of view or ideology
to showcase your own talents and the talents of other like minded people
to provide information for a community group.
There are a number of problems you can run into when starting a magazine,
and many of these have brought down many publications that really could
have taken off. However most of these issues could have been avoided if
proper planning had been undertaken from the beginning. If you are consider
starting your own magazine then get the right advise from the outset.
The more informed you are, the more likely you are to succeed.
